RICHMOND HILL, June 25, 2024 — The Richmond Hill Friends of the Library recently honored the memory of long-time library manager Kate Barker by donating six books to complement the Bryan County–Richmond Hill Public Library’s collection of local historical texts. The donation aligns with Barker’s mission of giving library patrons literature and resources to educate, engage, and benefit them. It is also a nod to her legacy as an avid reader and promoter of historical knowledge and culture. Purchased through the Richmond Hill Historical Society, the books are part of Arcadia Publishing’s bestselling “Images of America” series written by local authors and include:
– Walking Tours of Old Savannah
– The Savannah Races
– Forever Across the Marsh
– Civil War Ghosts of Central Georgia and Savannah
– Historic Haunts of Savannah
– The Ghostly Tales of Savannah
“This collaboration reflects the community-minded spirit of Richmond Hill and Bryan County,” said Orna Swanson, president of the Richmond Hill Friends of the Library and vice president of the Richmond Hill Historical Society. “It’s a wonderful way to honor the memory of Kate, who supported this community in so many ways, from serving in the Armed Forces to working as the library manager. It’s just a small token of the immense appreciation we have for her.”
Barker worked at the Bryan County–Richmond Hill Public Library for nearly 30 years. She retired in 2021 and passed away unexpectedly in late March 2024. Known for her kindness, generosity of spirit and helpful attitude, she made a lasting impression on those who knew her.
“Kate meant so much to so many,” said Betty Rosenthal, a former library board member and current treasurer of the Friends of the Library. “As an organization dedicated to supporting the library, the Friends wanted to recognize the tremendous impact Kate had on those around her. Completing the library’s collection of works dedicated to local culture and history seemed like a wonderful way to honor her memory while also supporting the Richmond Hill Historical Society.”
