SUMMARY:Independence Day at Fort McAllister State Historic Park
DESCRIPTION:Step back in time and commemorate the 250th Independence Day with the spirit of 1864! For the first time and for the 250th only\, we will have a special visit from Claude-Étienne Minié.  \nThis traditional celebration is filled with captivating living history demonstrations\, musket round-making\, old-timey games\, and an artillery display! \n4:00 PM – Guided Kids Tactical Water Battle  \n4:30 PM – Watermelon Eating Contest  \n5:00 PM – Musket Round making and meet Claude-Étienne Minié!  \n5:30 PM – Guilded Civil War Games \n6:00 PM – Butter Making  \n6:30 PM – Cannon Firing Muskets firing throughout the day!  \nAdmission is $12 per person\, but you receive a discount of $4 off when you visit Fort Morris’s celebration earlier in the day! Make sure to tell them you plan to visit Fort McAllister to receive your coupon. \nABOUT FORT MCALLISTER: \nLocated south of Savannah on the banks of the Ogeechee River\, Fort McAllister showcases the best-preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy. The earthworks were attacked seven times by Union ironclads but did not fall until 1864 — ending Gen. William T. Sherman’s “March to the Sea.” Visitors can explore the grounds with cannons\, a furnace\, bombproof\, barracks\, palisades and more\, while a Civil War museum contains artifacts\, a video and gift shop. \nNestled among giant live oaks\, Spanish moss and salt marsh\, this park is a beautiful location for camping\, fishing\, boating and picnicking. Seven cabins sit on stilts near the marsh\, surrounded by palm trees and palmettos. The shaded campground is bordered by tidal Redbird Creek\, a boat ramp\, fishing dock and nature trail.
